Yearning to Rest Easy in Your RV? Our Denver Mattress Review

Yearning to Rest Easy in Your RV? Our Denver Mattress Review

Among the top things that people dislike about camping is the typically-uncomfortable sleeping situation. Many of us upgrade from a tent to a trailer or motorhome for this reason, happily giving up air mattresses for more of the comforts of home…or so we think. It’s no secret if you’ve shopped for or owned a trailer or RV that the mattress is one of the areas where most manufacturers cut costs.

After sleeping on a brand new, basic foam mattress in our Trek every night for three months, it developed a crater. Maybe it would have lasted a while longer if we used our RV with the same frequency the majority of people do – a few weekends a year, a longer week or two trip here and there – but we still don’t think we’re out of line in expecting a little better than this from the mattress’ maker, even if it’s a low-end one and we’ve done extended travel.

Bad uncomfortable RV mattress

Hard to tell from just a photo, but the mattress included with our RV developed a giant crater in the center.

We woke up every morning with a slightly more concave bed than the day before, and found ourselves waking up increasingly more sore. We started looking for mattress options at RV shows and online, knowing our sleep and bodies were suffering.

After chatting with Lippert Components about their Denver Mattress RV line for a bit, they had options that would work with our unique motorized loft bed in the Trek – one that required a mattress that was neither heavy or thick. It’s hard to find those two qualities and get a comfortable night’s sleep! They offered to send us their RV Supreme Euro Top Mattress to test if we wanted to offer them our feedback. It sounded like a great excuse to take some extra naps in the name of research, and less painful ones at that!

Whenever we receive something to test through our blog we try to extend the benefit beyond just ourselves (because where would we be without our wonderful readers?). Once we’d received ours and had a couple restful, comfortable nights of sleep on it, we were totally sold and asked if we could give away a mattress in a contest and shave the love. Denver Mattress said yes! So if you have an RV with an uncomfortable mattress and are up for a small challenge, stay with me here for another minute…

We were of course skeptical of a mattress that was advertised as light and thin, then came rolled up in a box that fit in the back of our Jeep, but I’m thrilled to report that the quality is high in this one and we’re very happy with the it after three months of consistent use. There are no signs at all of a crater forming! It’s not overly hard, not overly soft – about the same firmness as a residential pillow-top spring mattress.

For anyone in the market for a new RV mattress, Denver Mattresses are made in the USA, with lots of sizes available to fit almost any RV bed, including our short queen with radius corners. Ours still allows the bed to go up to the ceiling (or for a bed with storage beneath to be lifted easily). Free shipping within the continental US, easy unpacking (I did it alone while Jason was at a conference!), and the ability to use it the first night without it needing to “air out” or decompress slowly like a memory foam mattress made it extremely convenient for full-time travelers like ourselves who don’t have room for an extra mattress to hang out in our RV.

If you’d like to see a second opinion on how it worked out for another RV owner who has under-bed storage, check out this review by Mike Pelchat of iRV2.

Here's how it came out of the box - a mattress burrito that easily rolled out and was ready to use right away.

Here’s how it came out of the box – a mattress ‘burrito’ that easily rolled out and was ready to use right away. Mmmm burritos..

And right after unrolling it, it was ready to use!

And right after unrolling it, it was ready to use! A perfect fit too.

Don’t just take our word for it though. At the end of the day, Toby’s satisfaction is still most important:

Now, on to the contest!

Rather than a typical “winner drawn at random” contest, we decided to have some fun with this: we want to hear why you need or want a new RV mattress. Try to keep it PG-13 though, okay? We do like to actually sleep at night on ours. 😉

We’ll be judging all the entries ourselves based on the story we feel is most compelling/funny/worthy of the prize (valued at $599).

The contest ends Thursday, August 20, 2015, and we will announce the winner by social media and directly contact them via email on Friday, August 21, 2015. Good luck!!

The contest has ended, and we’re excited to announce the winner for our Denver Mattress giveaway from Lippert Components:

Jeremy P. and his wife Alexandra, full-time RVers and bloggers at vandyvagabonds.com. Jeremy’s story was so descriptive and funny that it really stole our hearts – maybe because things like this happen to us all too often:

“I think we should win this mattress for two reasons.

First, it only took one night in the new rig to know our relationship would be in jeopardy if we kept the factory mattress. Like Kristin and Jason, we suffer from the dreaded “Forced Cuddling” associated with the slowly evolving mattress crater.

Second, my wife says I suffer from a little known disorder whose symptoms include a terrible history of losing a mattress on the highway during transport from the store. I swear the tie downs were tight, but they had no chance against Tennessee foothill crosswinds. Dragging a mattress across a freeway frogger-style is no way to spend time on the full-timer road. That delicious mattress burrito delivered directly to our door will no doubt save the lives of many innocent bystanders should I be forced to shop in-store for my next mattress purchase.

Save a marriage. Save lives. Choose us!”

Thank you to everyone who entered, we had some great entries and we hate that we can’t give everyone a prize! For those of you badly in need of a new mattress, don’t forget that Denver Mattress has free shipping from their online store – your back will thank you!

If it’s good enough for Toby, it’s good enough for us. 🙂 The sad mattress that came with our RV was the first thing to get tossed out. Luckily, we were able to cut our residential king latex mattress down to fit and it’s working out really well. When it wears out, we’ll definitely check out the Denver. See you guys on the road soon!

How is the mattress holding up at this point?

Hi Carol! We’ve been really happy with it, but of course can’t make long term predictions based on a few months’ use, other than it being a heck of a lot better than the old one was after the same amount of time! I think it will stand the test of time. Follow the Vandy Vagabonds for their reviews too!

Just discovered your blog/information website…. thanks for the splendid review of the Denver mattress. We’ve been researching rv mattresses for several months, as 1/2 of our “luxurious” sleep number bed, has a bad leak & purchasing a new chamber isn’t worth the $$ as we have never slept well on this type of mattress! Wish we had seen your contest while it was active… would have been fun to share some of our hilarious stories about our sleep number bed! Thanks again for your review… we’ll be taking your advice.
    Cheers

We bought a Denver RV mattress. Unboxed it over a week ago and the ends are still flat. Will it ever reinflate? Did we get a bad one?

Hey Elaine! Mine fluffed up with no issues, so I would reach out to their customer support for more help. Hopefully they can make it right for you.
