Well, we finally did it: a day later than we hoped to be rolling due to an unforeseen brake issue caused by a bad truck-to-trailer cord, but we are on the road! The feeling of seeing the trailer lurch forward and begin rolling out of our yard was akin to watching a child take its first steps. Nearly a year of blood, sweat and tears went into this day, and we couldn’t have been more proud (and relieved!) Airstream parents.
We’re not finished with it by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s habitable for now, and that’s all we need to have a good first trip. We’re off to Indiana then Ohio to visit my folks, then back to Knoxville for a bit to finish up some of the interior trim before we set out for our first longer trip.
A huge thank you goes out to all our friends and family who lent a hand through the process, the immeasurably helpful folks at AirForums for helping us learn online along the way. We hope to someday return the favor and offer lots of tips and tricks from the road as we acclimate to our new aluminum-covered way of life!
And now a little cover song from the cutest Airstream-owning band ever, Channing and Quinn:
“On the road again
Goin’ places that I’ve never been
Seein’ things that I may never see again,
And I can’t wait to get on the road again.
On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We’re the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin’ our way
And our way
Is on the road again
Just can’t wait to get on the road again” – Willie Nelson
